Gimme Society – California Style

This is presented as a heartbreaking tale of the horrors of the California State budget impasse:

Kathy Sapp, who operates a state-funded day care center in her East Oakland home, has been running on fumes since the state Department of Education – its purse strings tied because of the budget impasse – stopped paying her and hundreds of other child care providers in California in early June.

To trim costs as she waits for her $4,000 monthly payments, she has stopped taking field trips to restaurants, has reduced the kids’ milk portions and sometimes uses beans instead of meat. She’s dipping into her savings, but she might have to take out a loan to cover groceries, her mortgage, her utility bills and her insurance if the 50-day stalemate drags on much longer.

On Monday afternoon, three preschoolers she is caring for woke from a nap after a trip to the library and ate a snack of cheese sandwiches, apple juice and bananas.

OK – so this is state-funded babysitting.  But what is actually missing from this report?  Parents.  As in – if this woman is having problems taking care of their children why doesn’t she go to the parents who are entrusting this woman with the care of their children and get the fracking money from them?

Of course then it wouldn’t be “free” would it?  But can anyone explain where in the US or California Constitution a “right” to “free” babysitting?  Just how did the instutions that were created to promote and protect the freedom of its citizens become a big babysitting entitlement machine?  The complete and utter degradation of what it means to be a free citizen in a free society has come down to hundreds and hundreds of taxpayer funded babysitting services.

So as the taxpayers of California are being raped to the tune of 8 to 11 percent of their salaries, each and every year, remember that you are paying for essential babysitting services.

Work harder – millions on welfare depend on you!

Competing With the Welfare Economy

Australia has a long history of appeasing the aboriginal population with money that they have to do nothing to obtain.  And guess what?  Sitting around and getting drunk and watching TV is easier than working for a living:

Artist Bernadette Tjingaling has been on CDEP longer than she can remember.

The 34-year-old was busy cleaning up at the Merrepen Arts Centre at Nauiyu when The Australian visited.

She was helping to prepare for the community’s annual arts festival, which will be held later this month.

Like many others in her community, Ms Tjingaling was forced onto the work-for-the-dole program when the Howard government abolished CDEP last year. She is one of the few in the community who works in exchange for her welfare payments.

Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has reversed the previous government’s decision to abolish CDEP, but Ms Tjingaling said that after months of being paid a little over $200 a week for doing nothing, many people in her community did not want to go back onto CDEP, let alone undertake full-time work in local industries.

“Everybody used to work here,” she says, pointing around the arts centre. “When Centrelink came back on, everybody got lazy staying home.”

Now, would the “shocked” progressives in the audience please raise their hands?  Anybody you know who would be surprised that getting paid to do nothing–even a pittance that just gets you by–is preferred to working?

And its really interesting after being up there in the northern part of Australia with a bigger aboriginal population that you see the results right there every day.   The natives are sitting around the front of the mall or some store with the big bottles of beer.  They obviously have nothing to do, and spend their days getting drunk from about noon till they pass out.  And then start the same thing the next day.

There are Help Wanted signs in just about every store in the mall, but you never see any aboriginal people working in the stores.  Just sitting outside getting drunk.  And that’s how it ends up with a welfare state:

Tiwi Land Council business development manager Brian Clancy said a company set up by traditional owners on the island had trouble finding staff to work in its forestry operations.

“We’re competing with the welfare economy,” Mr Clancy said. “People just say straight out: ‘Why would we come out to work when we can go home and watch a video and still get our 280 bucks at the end of the week?’ It makes it very hard.”

Its just that you eventually hit some point where there are more drunks on the couch than the working people will pay for.  In Australia the aboriginal population is very small compared to the country at large, so its more of a rounding error in the national budget to just give them weekly beer money.  And the aboriginal society continues to disintegrate.  Wife beating (well, live-in woman beating – marriage is almost extinct) is common, just about everybody eventually ends up arrested for drunkness or theft, and the checks still come.

Isn’t this a case of genocide?  Just being done one check and case of beer at a time.

Manmade Global Warming Recap

If you believe the recent track record (seeding the ocean with algae, for example), the odds that we would really screw terraforming up are almost 100%. Toss in the UN and that goes to 150%. Indeed, given the fact that all the proposed programs — Kyoto, etc. — have zero chance of any meaningful effect other than shifting the wealth of the first world to the soon to be first world, let’s go the full 200%.

Let’s review:

  • We’ve allegedly “warmed” the planet (all by our lonesomes, no help from the sun, that only happens on Mars.)….
  • Warmed…. the entire planet ( a little, a middling, a lot: take your pick)
  • Warmed…. by “not realizing what we were doing.” (I pass over the fact that, in general, it is better for humans and all life to have a warmer Earth — see: “Ages, Ice.” )
  • The solution is to, well, “cool the planet.”
The word for this is “Terraforming” meaning working on and reshaping an entire world. And we’re going to do this, I understand, on a crash program to go on for a century with no limit as to budget.
A race of semi-smart monkeys that can bottle water in Fiji, get it to a corner store in Seattle, but that can’t even — as yet — figure out how to get clean water to most of the living people across the planet. You’ll have to excuse me if I observe we don’t even begin to have the knowledge and power to terraform the Earth. It simply isn’t in the cards.

Most Rich People Are Smarter and Work Harder Than You

If you’re not as successful as you’d like to be in life it’s probably because you’re not that smart, or you’re not making good choices in your life. Maybe you spend too much money downloading music off the internet or eat out at restaurants too often. Maybe you’ve been passed over for promotion because you’ve never opted to stay late at work and help out.

generally, the reason the guy in the “rich” part of town has a newer car than you do or a bigger house isn’t because there’s some cabal of greedy, oppressive troglodytes working to keep your wages down but rather because that guy is probably smarter than you. Works harder than you. And, perhaps most importantly, made better decisions in his life than you did.
This will anger a lot of the class warfare people who are likely union supporters and subscribe to John Edwards’ “two Americas” theory, but those people are mostly angry because nobody wants to believe that their lack of fulfillment with their lives is their own fault. It’s always easier to blame some invisible, anonymous conspiracy.
Life is all about the choices we make, and when you make poor ones it’s your own fault not mine. Your inability to be successful is no mortgage upon the success I’ve managed to wrest from the world for myself and my family.
