Compare and Contrast

Earlier this year it was reported that the London borough of Haringey had used a spy plane to record residents’ energy use patterns:

Thermal images of homes have been taken by a light aircraft fitted with military spy technology to record the heat escaping from people’s houses.Maps identifying individual homes have now been placed on the internet to encourage occupiers to reduce their wastage and carbon emissions by fitting insulation and turning the thermostat down.

More specifically:

An aircraft, fitted with a military-style thermal imager, flew over the borough 17 times to take pictures of almost every house in the area.Footage of heat loss was converted into stills, then laid over a map of the area, before each house was given colour-coded ratings.

Homes that were losing the most heat were represented as bright red on the map. The least wasteful households were shown in deep blue. Shades of paler blues and reds were used to show grades of heat loss.

The Haringey heat map is now available online.

Creepy government intrusion.  Very Big Brother from the land of George Orwell.  So its just fine for government to actively snoop on your house.  And what happens when you drive down the street, record the images and make them available on the web?  How about this?

A formal complaint about Google’s Street View has been sent to the Information Commissioner (ICO).

Drawn up by lobby group Privacy International (PI), it cites more than 200 reports from members of the public identifiable via the service.

PI wants Street View shut down while the ICO investigates the service.

“The ICO has repeatedly made clear that it believes that in Street View the necessary safeguards are in place to protect people’s privacy,” said Google.

Privacy International (PI) director Simon Davies said his organisation had filed the complaint given the “clear embarrassment and damage” Street View had caused to many Britons.

Active government invasion of your privacy is OK, recording public views of the streets isn’t.

Britain is a strange, strange country any more.

Brown and Obama – VisionQuest

I ran across a great review of Gordon Brown and The Holy Messiah’s visions for the future by Janet Daley in the UK Telegraph:

Mr Obama – who gives the impression of being considerably out of his depth in the economic maelstrom – talks of an “opportunity” to “reorganise our priorities”. He gave a major speech last week in which he actually seemed to suggest that the present crisis had been caused by America’s failure to develop a universal health care system and to attend to the impending environmental disaster of global warming (“we made the wrong choices”), and that by focusing on these matters a way can be found out of the country’s economic problems.

Is he quite mad? Does he really believe that the banking crisis and the recession were some kind of divine retribution for the absence of universal health care, and excessive carbon emissions? Or is he suggesting that a practical solution lies in spending money on health care and the development of alternative energy sources?

Its a power grab and everyone knows it who is actually paying attention.  Here’s Mr. Brown’s vision for the future:

In Gordon Brown’s fantasy, this is an “opportunity” to exercise control over the whole world. Not just stricter regulation by national governments of their own economic institutions, but a wondrous new level of international regulation by supranational functionaries – to be appointed by whom? A World Government agency accountable to no electorate and with no democratic mandate from the populations over whom it will wield such power? Trotskyists used to say that Stalinist Russia had failed to achieve Utopia because it had embraced “socialism in one country” rather than going for “world revolution”. Now, we are being told that Labour’s market-led social justice programme failed because it opted for “regulation in one country” instead of understanding the need for “world regulation”.

Maybe being an ex-Marxist is a bit like being a lapsed Catholic: you never quite get rid of the old thought patterns.

In the more overheated renditions of the Brown theme, there is talk of a “global vision for fairness”, in which the very poverty that is being visited upon all the developed economies will somehow make it possible to redistribute wealth to the developing world.

And these wonderful visions of destroying rich countries in order to make everybody equally poor have been voted into office by a bunc h of idiots who somehow think they will get everything for “free”.  Free health care, free mortgages, car tires automatically inflated to the right pressure, free food, and all done by taking the money from the six evil rich people who control all the wealth.

Horse Pellets and Hockey Sticks.  We get what we deserve.

UK Police – 17,000 Women Subject to “Honor” Abuse a Year

Each and every year in just Britain – at least according to the Association of Chief Police Officers:

Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to “honour” related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs.

It warns that the number of girls falling victim to forced marriages, kidnappings, sexual assaults, beatings and even murder by relatives intent on upholding the “honour” of their family is up to 35 times higher than official figures suggest.

The crisis, with children as young as 11 having been sent abroad to be married,………..

Yes – you read that right.  11 year old girls being sent to Bangladesh and Pakistan to become “brides”.  Beatings and Murders occurring in Britain every day.  And then the Archbishop of Canterbury has the gall to come out and say that Britain will need to make some accommodation with sharia law?  It seems like this is already happening:

Women who have been taken overseas to be married against their will are now being rescued on an almost daily basis. The Government’s Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) handled approximately 400 cases last year – 167 of them leading to young Britons being helped back to the UK to escape unwanted partners overseas.

So where is the outraged voice of global feminism?  Can you imagine the outcry if the headlines were “17,000 Blacks subject to Abuse Every Year by Whites”?  And this is  just Britain.  What about France and Germany and Sweden and all the other countries with huge Muslim populations that they are afraid of offending?

Just as a heartbreaking example:

The human cost of honour crime was vividly captured in a haunting video message from murdered Banaz Mahmood, who revealed how her own father had tried to kill her after she abandoned her arranged marriage and fell in love with another man. In the grainy message she told how he plied her with brandy – the first time she had ever drunk alcohol – pulled the curtains and asked her to turn around.

The 19-year-old fled, but less than a month after making the grainy video on a mobile phone, Banaz was dead. Her naked body was found buried in a yard in Birmingham in 2006, more than 100 miles from her London home. She had been raped and tortured by men hired by her uncle to kill her. Mahmood’s father, uncle and one of her killers were sentenced to a total of 60 years in jail for the murder.

Just what kind of uncle hires thugs to rape, torture, and murder his niece?

$40,000 Fine or Six Months in Jail for Littering

From the UK:

A young mother-of-three is to be tried by a crown court jury after being accused of throwing an apple core from her car on to the pavement.

Kate Badger, 26, denies the littering charge but also claims the nature of the accusation is “ridiculous” because apples are biodegradable.

The council originally wanted simply to issue a £60 on-the-spot penalty for the alleged offence, said to have been committed on March 19 last year while Miss Badger’s Volkswagen Golf was parked on a street in Wolverhampton town centre.

Miss Badger refused to pay and the local authority took her to the magistrates’ court, where she chose to be tried by a jury in a crown court.

She faces a fine of up to £20,000 or six months in prison if she is found guilty of the charge, which states that she threw “controlled waste” from the car.

Oh how this must warm the hearts of the US EcoNazis. They only hope that this kind of power comes their way.

HillaryCare Preview 1523 – No Treatment for You Fatso!

And won’t it be wonderful when those caring bureaucrats like those who staff FEMA and the State Department get to decide just what behaviors disqualify you for treatment?

Patients could be required to stop smoking, take exercise or lose weight before they can be treated on the National Health Service, Gordon Brown has suggested.

In a New Year message to NHS staff, the Prime Minister indicates people may have to fulfil new “responsibilities” in order to establish their entitlement to care.

Women smoking;

Despite the NHS commitment to provide free universal care, it is already common for doctors to set conditions on patients seeking treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence already considers so-called self-induced illnesses in setting the criteria that determine which patients should qualify for new or expensive health treatments.

“We will describe how we will achieve our shared ambition of an NHS which is more personal and responsive to individual needs,” the Prime Minister writes.

Just how Weenie has Britain Become?

Very very very – apparently.

clipped from www.spiked-online.com
Police forces around Britain are supplying households with posters warning children not to knock on their doors.
says: ‘SORRY! No Trick Or Treat…. Trick or treat causes DANGER to the children who are often unsupervised; DAMAGE to other people’s property; and DISTRESS to the elderly and vulnerable.’

And of course, no public holiday is complete these days without lectures from on high about how wasteful we are.
The UK Energy Savings alliance has issued advice on how to celebrate ‘Hallowgreen’: make your kids costumes from second-hand clothes; only give out sweets that don’t come with packaging to trick-or-treaters; and give your own children a re-useable container for trick-or-treating, such as a ‘cloth bag, decorated lunch box or upside-down hat’ (10). There’s nothing like a bit of patronising advice about the green’n’careful way to do things to inject a bit of spirit into a minor kind-of holiday.
