Europe – Person and non-Person

Thanks to Moonbattery:

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has agreed to hear the case of Matthew, a chimpanzee whom animal rights fanatics want officially declared as a person — a crucial step toward the day welfare benefits can be collected on behalf of animals, not to mention human–animal marriages.

Europe to Tibet – You Are on Your Own

The Norwegian government claims it has directed criticism against China after Chinese authorities put down protests in Tibet over the weekend, but says it doubts a boycott of the Olympics would have any positive effect.

Johansen stressed, however, that there are some “positive” things happening in China in the area of human rights. He therefore has little faith that attempts to isolate China or boycott the upcoming Olympics would do much good.

Speaking for the Italian government, Italian Foreign Undersecretary Gianni Vernetti told Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi that China should avoid using force against demonstrators and should uphold human rights including freedom of expression.

Speaking on Italian radio, Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema rejected calls to boycott the Olympics.

He said the Beijing Games were ”an unrepeatable opportunity” to put pressure on China to allow dissidents to voice their grievances.

The speaker of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, suggested that European Union leaders should boycott the Olympic opening ceremony.

*Ed – oooh – won’t that strike fear into the hearts of the leaders of a country that has no problem with driving tanks over its own citizens.  An opening ceremony boycott!

France’s Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner says the European Union should consider boycotting the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics if violence continues in Tibet.

He insisted that France had no plans to boycott the entire Olympic Games, saying that would not be “just.”

Halt!  Or I will say Halt! again.

Media Manipulation Hamas Style

And the European media just eats it up.

On at least two occasions this week, Hamas staged scenes of darkness as part of its campaign to end the political and economic sanctions against the Gaza Strip, Palestinian journalists said Wednesday.

In the first case, journalists who were invited to cover the Hamas government meeting were surprised to see Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and his ministers sitting around a table with burning candles.
In the second case on Tuesday, journalists noticed that Hamas legislators who were meeting in Gaza City also sat in front of burning candles.
But some of the journalists noticed that there was actually no need for the candles because both meetings were being held in daylight.
“They had closed the curtains in the rooms to create the impression that Hamas leaders were also suffering as a result of the power stoppage,” one journalist told The Jerusalem Post. “It was obvious that the whole thing was staged.”

Obama and the Childish Left

Hillary’s fall from grace has been amazingly quick, because the Dems — the Party of the Needy, those who Crave to be Cared For, the Emotional Victims — they have all found a new fuzzy toy to cling to. Hillary Clinton is now yesterday’s toy, lying discarded on the floor. And she knows it.

Children often have fantasies about a Good Parent — one who loves you and takes care of you forever and ever, who forgives your transgressions whatever they may be, who demands nothing, and never, ever hurts your feelings. Obama is now the Good Parent of the childish Left — a good majority of the Dems, it would seem.
In a child’s mind the Good Parent is often played against a complementary fantasy, the Bad Parent — call them Republicans in this case. The Bad Parent stands for the sterner aspects of reality. Since Leftism is basically an infantile protest against adulthood, Republicans represent what Sigmund Freud called the Reality Principle.
Reality is the part of the world we all need to come to terms with in order to earn a living, to deal with losses in our lives, and still be productive and moral adults.
The childish Left constantly needs someone to adore — FDR, JFK, Bill Clinton before the Fall.
Meanwhile, the United States still needs a real adult to lead it through the next four or eight years. The nation is at war — though the infantile half of our population lives in denial. Benazir Bhutto was just assassinated in Pakistan, where the throw-back jihadists are eagerly looking for dirty bombs or worse. Ahmadi-Nejad just challenged the US Navy in the Strait of Hormuz with five suicide boats. Forty percent of the world’s oil goes through the bottleneck of the strait. Europe is in decline. The United Nations is hopelessly sleazy and corrupt. Almost twenty years of jihadist genocide in the Sudan continues today, with African victims galore. Kenya just exploded in an orgy of jihadist violence. Vladimir Putin is running a KGB state in Russia, threatening oil and gas cutoffs to our feckless allies in Europe. And President Bush is making a Hail Mary pass in the Middle East, hoping to make some progress by traveling there. The terrorists have promised to try to assassinate him, too.

The media aren’t interested. They’re back in the Kennedy days, swaddled in the warm blankets of their second childhood.

Boy, do we need the grownups today.
