Trojan House: New poster-child of solar failure

Yeah, but shouldn’t the first clue of failure have been the very idea of building an 800 square-foot house in Troy, MI that cost $900,000 — that is, $1,125 per square foot? The median price of homes in Troy is about $159,000 and that’s for an 1,800 sq. ft home — about $88 per square foot.

Even if the solar system hadn’t malfunctioned, who in their right mind would consider the house a success?

I suppose it’s fitting that this tragi-comedy occurred in a place called Troy — the greens are trying to deceive us in adopting their nutty policies and goofy technologies with a Trojan House.

It was supposed to be a shining example of the green movement — a completely independent solar-powered house with no gas or electrical hookups.
Seven months ago, officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the $900,000 house owned by the city of Troy that was to be used as an educational tool and meeting spot.
But it never opened to the public. And it remains closed.
Frozen pipes during the winter caused $16,000 in damage to floors, and city officials aren’t sure when the house at the Troy Community Center will open…
“The system was designed to kick a heater on to keep water from freezing,” [the superintendent of parks for the city] said. “The heater drew all reserve power out of the battery causing the system to back down and the pipes froze.”

u-BOT 5 is a robot designed by researchers at the University of Massachusetts. It was made to help old people should something happen to them. Its capabilities include “picking up small objects, dialing 911 and even using a stethoscope to check vitals.” It packs a webcam, microphone, LCD touchscreen, WiFi, and could potentially be used to make virtual housecalls . As you can see from the picture, if you ever fall and can’t get up there’s nothing to fear when uBOT-5 is near. He’ll just wheel himself over and, uh, kidney punch you with his little ball-hands.

Later this year, scientists will put a 40,000-pound chemical laser in the belly of a gunship flying at 300 mph and take aim at targets as far away as five miles. And we’re not talking aluminum cans. Boeing’s new Advanced Tactical Laser will cook trucks, tanks, radio stations—the kinds of things hit with missiles and rockets today. Whereas conventional projectiles can lose sight of their target and be shot down or deflected, the ATL moves at the speed of light and can strike several targets in rapid succession.

1. Find Your Target
When the C-130 flies within targeting range (up to five miles away), the gunner aims using a rotating video camera mounted beneath the fuselage. The computer locks onto the object to continually track it. A second crew member precisely adjusts the laser beam’s strength—higher power to disable vehicles, lower power to knock out, say, a small power generator. The gunner hits “fire,” and the computer takes over from there.

2. Heat Up the Laser
In a fraction of a second, chlorine gas mixes with hydrogen peroxide. The resulting chemical reaction creates highly energetic oxygen molecules. Pressurized nitrogen pushes the oxygen through a fine mist of iodine, transferring the oxygen’s energy to iodine molecules, which shed it in the form of intense light.

3. Amplify the Beam
The optical resonator bounces this light between mirrors, forcing more iodine molecules to cough up their photons, further increasing the laser beam’s intensity. From there, the light travels through a sealed pipe above the weapon’s crew station and into a chamber called the optical bench. There, sensors determine the beam’s quality, while mechanically controlled mirrors compensate for movement of the airplane, vibration and atmospheric conditions. Precise airflow regulates the chamber’s temperature and humidity, which helps keep the beam strong.

4. Stand Clear
A kind of reverse telescope called the beam expander inside a retractable, swiveling pod called the turret widens the beam to 20 inches and aims it. The laser’s computer determines the distance to the target and adjusts the beam so it condenses into a focused point at just the right spot. Tracking computers help make microscopic adjustments to compensate for both the airplane’s and the target’s movement. A burst of a few seconds’ duration will burn a several-inch-wide hole in whatever it hits.

Senate Moves Forward on Telecom Immunity

The trial lawyers continue to weep at the lost fees they would get from suing these companies into bankruptcy. Which is why the Democrats are trying to prevent immunity from happening of course.

All the lectures on civil rights from Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama came to nothing yesterday when the Senate considered immunity for telecommunications companies which cooperated with the terrorist surveillance program. All the Republicans and 12 Democrats voted to reject an attempt to drop immunity from the bill. It’s as if no one cares about the children anymore.

Eco-Hyperventilating

For those who have better things to do than keep track of the latest in a long series of UN sponsored playtimes about the environment, there is one going on in Bali now. Of course a ton of very, very, VERY serious bloggers like this one, writing very, very, very, VERY, VERY serious posts:

The next three days might prove to be among the most crucial in history. If countries can agree to talks that will lead to the cuts in emissions that will keep global conditions within tolerable levels, then humankind could have a bright future. If, however, governments fail to rise to this challenge there could be very rough times ahead…………

Leadership and resolve is now needed from those countries who say they see the danger posed by rapid climate change. The EU must keep its nerve, and not only argue for an obligation on industrialised countries to cut emissions by a sufficient amount, but to also resist those countries who are trying to wreck these talks by insisting that developing countries should take on legally binding targets as well. The rich nations have the means to act and are largely responsible for the global temperature increase we already have……….

Some thoughts in response:

1. The next three days might prove to be among the most crucial in history.

Its overblown rhetoric like this which actually harms your own cause. The globaloney left and parasitic bureaucrats from the United Nations and all the associated NGOs have been crying doom about everything for such a long time that the sound becomes some sort of background noise.

You don’t really believe that the next 3 days will determine the fate of the earth. Otherwise why aren’t you spending every penny you own, mortgaging your house and car and all your possessions, and bringing every single resource you have in an effort to get your desired outcome? By your own words, this is the most crucial 3 days in all of human history and all you can do is sit around observing and yammering about it? You don’t do more than whine about the issue because you know this is more about some sort of money shakedown and an anti-capitalism kabuki dance.

Your governments certainly don’t believe that what you are saying is true. The heads of state aren’t convinced that its true or they would be there. The most cruical days in all human existence? The government representation is a lot more about a nice pre-Christmas vacation in a Pacific paradise. With a great opportunity to bash America, but that’s just gravy to the UN lickspittles and their ideological kin walking the beaches of Bali.

2. Leadership and resolve is now needed from those countries who say they see the danger posed by rapid climate change. The EU must keep its nerve

This would be the same EU that is growing its carbon dioxide emissions faster than the United States? Your moral slip is showing – and you don’t have any leadership on this either. Are you leaders willing to stand up and tell your citizens that they need to reduce their standard of living by 40%? No more flying, no more driving, no more building individual houses, no more than one sheet of toilet paper per use? Of course not. Because its just another sheet of paper with silly writing on it that the EU and all other countries in the world know they can ignore with absolutely no consequences to themselves. But it will make them feel really, really good to stand up and say they did something for the environment.

If you really wanted to effect global change you should encourage all the oil and coal use you can. Only when the oil and coal are gone will the global economy change to something else.

You actually think that mankind now possesses the power to terraform the entire planet? Again, I don’t believe you do. The whole article is about some vauge plan to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2020, but specifics on how that is to happen are thin on the ground. And will this have any effect on the global temperature? Not that anyone can prove with any measure of certainty. We don’t know the daily rainfall of the Earth. We don’t know the cloud cover percentage of the Earth to any certainty. We don’t know the temperatures and effects of the different currents in the oceans. There is so much we don’t know about the global atmosphere and especially how all the parts work together over this huge planet. And yet your religious belief in carbon emissions as the only source of global warming (see that big ball of fire in the sky? might it have some influence on the atmosphere?) means that you want everyone on the earth to give up technology? to stop driving cars? to stop heating or cooling their homes?

Again, you don’t really know what 40% reduction means or implies. Somehow you violated the earth with carbon emissions by flying from Britain to Bali. Journalists are exempt? Are you willing to accept nuclear power for your electricity? No nasty carbon emissions with nuclear. I couldn’t say for sure, but since most eco-nauts love the planet and hate nuclear power it is a guess you wouldn’t like that solution at all. But this is the end of days for the earth – would you be willing to compromise your “no nukes” stance to save the earth? Just how are you going to get your electricity? And don’t say wind power – it might sound good, but since you can’t depend on the wind 100 percent of the time every wind farm has to have some backup generation capability that will work when you can’t get power from those huge turbines. Your own government in the UK is proposing to put 2 giant wind turbines on every single mile of coastline, but they still admit that you have to have some backup power generation – if you want reliable electricity anyway.

So you use hysterical rhetoric, don’t actually believe in what you are saying, want to have some sort of moral stance taken rather than anything that would interrupt your own comfortable life, and believe in imaginary solutions to real world problems.

And then you wonder why we don’t believe you?

New Technology to Track Surgical Sponges

The system, which is FDA approved, is being used in all of Loyola’s operating rooms, its labor and delivery rooms, interventional cardiology laboratories in which surgical procedures are performed and its ambulatory surgery sites. As the technology grows, Loyola plans to use it to keep track of all medical equipment used during a procedure.

Every year, in the United States about 1,500 people have surgical objects accidentally left inside them after surgery, according to medical studies.
This technology is very familiar to anyone who has ever used a grocery checkout system. Each sponge has a unique bar code affixed to it that is scanned by a high-tech device to obtain a count. Before a procedure begins, the identification number of the patient and the badge of the surgical team member maintaining the count are scanned into the counter. As an added safety feature, the bar code is heat sealed into the sponge to eliminate any danger of it becoming detached during a procedure.
The counter has a color screen that keeps a running count of the sponges used. It provides visual and audio cues when a sponge is scanned in, scanned out and if one is missing or is being counted twice. Because each bar code is unique, the system will not allow a sponge to be accidentally counted twice.
