Just why does Oslo have a police force if this is all they do?
A new report by the justice minister, Knut Storberget, shows that 99.2 percent of all serious robberies on the streets of Oslo are never solved.
Last year, 11,033 crimes were reported, but just 80 were solved.
And the wave of robberies is increasing rapidly. Yesterday 33 people were the victims of serious crimes in Oslo. In the first three months of 2008, serious robberies in public places have increased by 10 percent.
Many city officials blame the increase in crime on begging and prostitution by people from other lands, mostly Eastern Europe.
A ban on begging in the streets was lifted in 2005.
But while the criminals go free, the politicians and police argue about what can be done. City Council head Erling Lae has sent a letter to the justice minister asking that “pågående” (insistent, or aggressive) begging and prostitution be forbidden.

Aggressive Prostitution? Well, Oslo is a nice liberal place now - with a crime rate four times that of New York City. It just seems that being a law-abiding citizen and living there isn’t too pleasant. However, since they apparently do nothing to actually prevent any crime or track down any criminals its probably a pretty cushy job to be a policeman there.

That’s the way I read this story:
Over 1000 trees planted today by 30 Greenpeace volunteers in a central North Island block of land have been pulled out.
The volunteers began at 7.30am today to “re-forest” around 1600 square metres of land that had been cleared for dairy farming.
Greenpeace climate campaigner Simon Boxer said the re-planting campaign was aimed at drawing more attention to the large amounts of forestry land in the Tahorakuri Forest, northeast of Taupo, being converted to dairy farming.
But state owned Landcorp chief executive Chris Kelly which leased the land said the trees had been removed soon after the volunteers left.
“The owners of the land have taken some action, the trees have gone and as I understand it the trees are being donated to a local group,” he said.
Some questions seem to come to mind:
1. Where do these idiots get off just deciding they can come on to land they don’t own and start planting things on it? In America that is known as trespass and is against the law. I guess its different in New Zealand. It seems that something like that is possible based on this:
Greenpeace communications manager Suzette Jackson said police had arrived mid-morning, and warned the volunteers against trespassing further.
“We left then because we weren’t trying to get our team arrested, and we managed to plant all our trees.
2. The owners had to spend money and time to remove all this crap - can they sue Greenpeace to get it back? Would be an interesting test case - but again this would assume that New Zealand has a functioning legal system that actually recognizes personal property.
3. And why is this such a big problem? Apparently its a new front in the war on cow farts.
“It’s not a traditional Greenpeace action. Since we’re just starting to work on the agricultural issues, specially on dairy conversion, we want to start off a lot more calmly.”
Forestry was being replaced with one of the most greenhouse gas-intensive industries possible and emissions in New Zealand were increasing dramatically as a result, he said.

In a stolen car that was actually found by its owner:
The car was reported stolen last week. After the theft, the car’s owner was fueling his motorcycle when he spotted his stolen car.
“While he was refueling his motorcycle, low and behold, the vehicle that he had reported stolen that belongs to him happened to pull into the gas station area also,” said Los Lunas Police Captain Charles Nuanes.
The car’s owner pulled the keys out of the ignition of his stolen car and the people in the car fled.
When police arrived, they found the explosive device and less than $1,000 worth of Iraqi cash.
So we have:
- Explosive device
- Iraqi Dinars (what good they would do in America - well, maybe they are worth more than the dollar now)
- Thieves
- Apparently really stupid thieves
And the conclusion by the FBI? Who might be interested in explosive devices found on American soil:
The FBI is now involved in the theft of a car after it was found in Los Lunas with an explosive device and Iraqi currency inside
FBI agents say that they have ruled out terrorism.
“We don’t know what their intentions were,” said Nuanes. “We don’t know what they were planning on doing with any of this.”
They don’t know the intentions, but there is no terrorism? Either the FBI is really trying to feed us a great big pile of feces or they think we are too stupid to actually understand this. Either way it sure doesn’t raise my confidence in the FBI and their ability to protect us.

Have been identified today:

Disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been identified as a long-standing client of a second high-priced call-girl ring, The Post has learned.
At the center of the new ring is Kristin “Billie” Davis, a busty bottle blonde who hails from a rough-and-tumble California trailer park. She has a reputation for hard-partying, shameless self-promotion and a rumored 10,000-name-long client list.
Davis’ alleged multimillion-dollar empire was smashed by city vice cops as she made plans to skip town. Prosecutors say she netted some $2 million last year by pimping out ladies of the night for as much as $1,000 an hour through four Web sites.
Only a thousand bucks an hour? Its good to know that he wasn’t spending his whole children’s college fund on the high-priced whores. I wonder if this will cause a second wave of “prostitution is a victimless crime” and “what difference does it make if he cheats” stories in the press.

From the Anti-Idotarian Rotweiller:
This is what living in a free country is like:
Police say two suspects are dead after an attempted home invasion.
Catawba County sheriff’s deputies say two men dressed in black and carrying pistols forced their way into a home on 33rd Avenue in Hickory around 11:00 last night. According to a sheriff’s official, the homeowner was armed with his own gun, and shot the suspects. Both suspects were pronounced dead at the scene.
Major Coy Reid with the sheriff’s office said both men were wearing masks and latex gloves.
This is what living under gun control is like:
WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) - A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence. She was shot to death.
The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Dan Rosenberg said. “Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line,” he said.
Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday’s late morning call.
The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Remember: When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

This schmuck says he’s going to the south of France to get some sun and get away from all the negative publicity.I wish the judge had sentenced him to go with this Marine to Iraq and carry his kit for his tour. He’d get some fracking sun then.
|
Jay Grodner, the Chicago lawyer who keyed a Marine’s car in anger because the car had military plates and a Marine insignia, finally got his day in court last week.
|
|
Grodner pleaded guilty in a Chicago courtroom packed with former Marines. Some had Marine pins on their coats, or baseball jackets with the Marine insignia. They didn’t yellor call him names. They came to support Marine Sgt. Michael McNulty, whose car Grodner defaced in December, but who couldn’t attend because he’s preparing for his second tour in Iraq.
|
|
So Grodner received a $600 fine, which will go to a Marine charity, 30 hours of community service and a year of court supervision. If he doesn’t pay up in a month, the judge promised to put him in jail for a year.

Welcome to…..Venezuela. The socialist/communist paradise.
| Quick, which nation shows average civilian deaths at 33 a day in the last third of 2007? Now name the one where civilian deaths average 19 a day? If you guessed Iraq and Venezuela, you’d have it backward. |
| Shocking? Of course. But true. With even Venezuelan officials admitting their country clocked 12,249 murders in 2007, Hugo Chavez’s socialist “sea of happiness” resembles a war zone. In December alone, Venezuela had 670 murders while Iraq had 476 — and that number is falling fast. |
| Meanwhile, night travel is strongly discouraged and no one wears jewelry openly. Security guards pack big firepower to guard tiny businesses like bakeries, and bulletproof cars are common. |
| Cuban doctors sent for propaganda purposes to help the poor often flee for their safety, leaving boarded up “free” health care kiosks in Caracas slums like Petare and Catia. |
| willingness to fight and to win is the difference between the brave Iraqi and American war effort and the festering mess in Chavez’s chaotic Venezuela. |

Undocumented Mexican Immigrants? Six Mexicans illegally in the country
| Six undocumented Mexican immigrants were arrested today by U.S. Border Patrol agents at Qualcomm Stadium, after a report that they were stealing food and water meant for evacuees, according to spokesman Damon Foreman. |
| San Diego police responded to a call about alleged theft from the evacuation center and encountered six people in a van who didn’t speak English and didn’t have California driver’s licenses, Foreman said. The police officers called the Border Patrol, who arrived at the stadium and made the arrests, he said. Foreman said the immigrants admitted they were Mexican citizens and that they were stealing. |

Some have no decency.
| To Jeremy Burris the word “liberty” was more than the name of his hometown. It was something worth fighting for.An all-American kid from a little all-American town, the 22-year-old Marine lance corporal died heroically in Iraq. More than a thousand people turned out Wednesday as a white hearse carried his body to burial in the historic 1800s Cooke Memorial Cemetery.
Within hours, the grave was desecrated. About 30 sprays of flowers were ripped apart, petals strewn over the loose earth. Flags decorating the gravesite were also torn down and sentimental notes and posters shredded.
“It looked like a big debris field about 40 feet square,” said Liberty Police Chief Mike Cummings. “This wasn’t done by the wind or animals. It was obviously intentional. |
| Minutes before his death, he rescued two soldiers wounded when a device exploded under their military vehicle. When Burris returned to the vehicle to retrieve some sensitive equipment, another bomb detonated, killing him, his family said. |

Update:
Scum of the Month Club gets a new member:
The recent desecration of Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremy Burris’ grave in Liberty County was not an anti-war protest or Halloween prank, police say, but a simple act of theft.
Investigators said Thursday that Wallace Ray DeBlanc, 41, ripped the 25 floral arrangements apart for the wire stands (worth about $1.50 each), a pewter cross and other decorations that could be resold to floral shops.
Liberty Police Chief Mike Cummings estimates DeBlanc, who has given police a statement, got $30 to $50 for the items. He has been charged with two felonies: theft of property from a grave and criminal mischief to a human burial site.
Probably for drugs I’m sure. And the reaction of the young Marine’s mother?
(LeBlanc) needs our prayers now,” said Burris’ mother, Karla.
“We’re not angry, not trying to get back at him. He committed a crime and he has to pay for it.”
Jeremy Burris, who was home-schooled and liked to lead the worship services in his church, was the oldest of her seven children. The Burrises have two other sons in the military: one in Iraq and another who just joined and will be headed there soon.
“This arrest is a relief,” she said. “It puts the period at the end of the sentence.
Somehow I don’t think I would be quite as forgiving. And its good to know that the state of Texas is a little more hard-nosed.
If convicted of the latest charges, DeBlanc could receive up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine for each one.
